GENUINE MERCEDES 123 HIRSCHMANN ANTENNA MAST - W123 240D 280CE 300D 300CD 300TD

Description

This is for one genuine Mercedes OEM Hirschmann automatic antenna mast. This is the only conventionally replaceable wear part on their automatic antenna units. Stock of these OEM masts are long gone. This one uses the smooth nylon cord, no teeth. On the W123 most all use the smooth cord. The cord with teeth is found on the last 2 years except for the 300TD which used the smooth cord through it's entire production run. See application list.
If your mast is slow to rise or won't fully retract it indicates that the motor is fine but the mast is binding.
After a certain point these antenna masts simply age out. Dust and dirt accumulates in the sliding joints over decades and eventually no amount of cleaner can get it out and no amount of lubricant can make up for the friction due to the scoring/wear inside. The other issue is the mast is no longer perfectly straight. They get slightly bowed over the years due to a constant headwind. You can try to straighten it but you will be chasing that daily. Even a good used antenna assembly will soon have these problems. The other condition that can only be fixed with a new mast is if a section of your nylon cord(usually towards the tip) has broken off inside the mechanism.
Official Hirschmann install instructions are on the back. Replacing your antenna mast is easily a DIY job. Unscrew the top retaining nut on the antenna and turn the radio on/antenna switch up. The mast will extend and basically eject itself. Just guide it up and out. Make sure that your old nylon cord comes out in one piece with a tapered tip. To install the new mast manually insert the nylon cord down into the hole. Feed it in until it stops. Have a second person turn the radio off/antenna switch down. Guide the new cord and mast as the motor reels it in. Reinstall the retaining nut.
Note, do not lubricate the nylon cord. It is designed to work dry. The motor uses contact friction to grasp the cord to move the antenna up and down. You can however lubricate the joints at each metal mast section now and then. Hirschmann recommends wiping the mast dry until clean and then lubricating with silicone spray or Teflon suspended spray
on a clean cloth for a final clean and lube. Remove as much visible lubricant as possible with a dry cloth to prevent attracting dust. Always wipe upward to avoid pushing dirt into the sliding joints.

Many problems arise from the antenna developing a slight bow from being fully extended. S
et the antenna as low as functionally possible especially at highway speeds. Also, if you've had a long drive or you're around a lot of construction consider a quick wipe of the mast before allowing it to retract.
Genuine Hirschmann antennas have
the "h"(deer) logo on the tip. Accept no substitutes. There are cheap light chrome copies of these masts being made but they're not going to last if that's what you're after. Your original antenna lasted 30+ years for a reason. This was the era when the Mercedes motto was longevity. Take care of this new antenna and it will easily go the same distance for about year.
